Question
Since getting my new ResMed machine in July, I have attempted 3 masks (1 full mask - Amara View; 2 nasal masks - Dreamwear and AirFit P10). Each mask has its own problem, thereby preventing me from getting a full night’s use of the machine and, as of late, never even getting to sleep, forcing me to take it off after 1-2 hours of utter frustration. I really want the nasal pillow masks to work (either one-not picky). I always end up opening my mouth as I drift off to sleep and then the sound of air escaping is so loud. So, I bought mouth tape, hoping that would do the trick. It hasn’t. As I start to drift off, my mouth/cheeks fill up with air, like a balloon, or strange squeaking kind of sounds are made in my mouth. Is this just me? Everyone I know who uses the nasal mask DOES NOT use a chin strap, NOR do they experience any problems, even if their mouth opens up. How can the machine be effective if your mouth opens up and the air escapes?
I do not know if a chin-strap is going to do any better than the tape. I would hope that it would, but it’s a crap shoot. Could the pressure be set too high? Is it a humidity issue? I do have a heated tube. I am frustrated and getting way too stressed over this issue. Thank you for any guidance you can give me.

Answer
If your jaw involuntarily opens when you sleep you are a mouth breather. Mouth breather's have the option of using a full face mask or any other style with a chin strap. The chin strap will provide enough resistance to keep the jaw closed during sleep.

Question
I’m currently using a small full face mask with my CPap. Can this be worn with it or is it intended only for the CPap masks for only the nasal area? I have one of those, too. Had to give up because of very dry mouth.
I sometimes get very dry mouth with the full face mask even with the humidifier in the cPap device, even though dry mouth isn’t supposed to happen. I doubt the chin strap will help.

Answer
You do not need a chinstrap with a full face mask. You are correct that chin straps work with nasal masks to prevent the mouth from opening. If you are experiencing dry mouth please be sure you do not have a large mask leak. Try increasing your humidity and consider a heated tubing.

Question
Please tell he how I can match a chinstrap to my mask. Thank you,

Answer
Typically you put the chin strap on first then the mask. The mask will help hold the chin strap in place.
