CPAP Humidifier Water Chambers and Parts

Congratulations! You are using heated humidification with your CPAP therapy. Humidification is recommended by both manufacturers and sleep doctors. Humidification prevents dryness of the mucous membranes in your nose, mouth, and throat during long-term therapy. All CPAP machines come with a heated humidifier. Travel CPAP machines use a different method, HME or heat moisture exchange, to provide humidification. The humidifier is part of the machine and has a heated plate on the bottom. This plate heats up, heating the water inside the water chamber to create humidification. The moist air joins the positive air pressure before entering your airway keeping you comfortable and compliant in your therapy.  

The water chamber, found inside the humidifier, is removable to be refilled and washed. The chamber should be filled with distilled water every night. Distilled water is the purest and will not cause build-up in your water chamber.  You want what you breathe to be the purest. Once a week the water should be discarded and the chamber washed in a sink of warm water and mild detergent. Use a toothbrush to clean all the crevices inside the water chamber. Depending on your cleaning regimen, the water chamber should be replaced every 6 months to one year. Replacing the water chamber regularly provides a healthier therapy since the water temperature fluctuates encouraging bacteria growth. Always check the integrity of your water chamber each week when you wash it. If you see any cracks you should replace them to prevent any water from getting inside your CPAP. If the chamber is cloudy or discolored, it is time to replace it as well.
