The DreamStation 2 AutoCPAP Advanced from Philips Respironics launched in April 2021. The Philips Respironics sleep engineers must have felt like it was a tall order to design a machine that improved upon the original DreamStation, and they certainly have.

Philips Respironics DreamStation 2 Auto CPAP Advanced: Smaller, Lighter, Quieter, and Feature Rich

*Philips’s Recall Notification

The DreamStation 2 Advanced is 22% smaller, 16% lighter, and just a little bit quieter than the original DreamStation—which was already a small, lightweight, quiet device. The shiny white finish of the DreamStation gets swapped out for a lovely matte black finish that is going to do a great job hiding dust.

These cosmetic changes are welcome but not at all the whole story about the improvements with Philips Respironics’ latest generation of AutoCPAP.

Integrated Humidifier

Philips Respironics DreamStation 2 Auto CPAP Advanced VS Original DreamStation

The DreamStation 2 AutoCPAP includes an integrated humidifier as a standard component, a welcome nod to the notion that humidification during CPAP is an essential adjunct and not a luxury upgrade. The machine ships with standard 15 mm tubing, but 12 mm micro-heated tubing is an optional component.

Getting it up and running is effortless. Plug it in, connect the tubing and your mask, and take a breath … right out of the box. The pandemic has accelerated change in how sleep therapy patients are assessed and fitted out with masks and equipment.

Philips Respironics has been at the forefront of adopting no-touch solutions. The DreamStation 2 is their first machine to benefit from these advantages.

Intuitive User Interface

Philips Respironics DreamStation 2 Auto CPAP Advanced VS Original DreamStation

The user interface on the original DreamStation was quite intuitive, but the DreamStation 2’s color screen further simplifies adjusting temperature, humidity, and ramp settings.

Icons for these three settings are sometimes buried in a machine’s user interface, but on the DreamStation 2, they stare right at you as soon as you press the home button.

In an innovative twist, you can now adjust these settings while the device is running. Not sure where you want the temperature or your ramp pressure? Make the change, feel the change, and adjust again if you want.

The interface is entirely a touch screen, so there are no knobs to turn. The Ramp Plus feature is accessible from the home screen and lets you establish a “while I’m still awake” pressure as well as a time interval.

The machine kicks into full function when the timer runs down or sooner if it detects an obstructive event. In other words, if you fall asleep watching TV, the DreamStation 2 has your back.

Mask fit and your AHI score are also readily visible from the home screen. Again, it’s nice not to have to hunt for this information. With just a glance, you can feel confident in the effectiveness of your sleep therapy.

When setting up the DreamStation 2, you’ll be pleased to see that there is almost zero chance the electrical plug will get accidentally pulled loose at the machine. The power supply connects tightly at the base of the device. You even have your choice of two angles for insertion.

If your electrical outlet is oriented closest to the side opposite the power supply connection, the cable can be tucked into a groove at the base of the machine rather than thrown over the top or dragged around the back. Why don’t more appliances have this feature?

The water chamber on the humidifier has a gasket cover that makes handling the chamber less splash-prone. Two filters and an SD card for data capture are tucked away inside the device, accessible when the humidifier is pulled out.

The DreamStation 2 comes with an AC power supply and a roomy travel bag. A DC power cord is sold separately. The battery pack sold for the original DreamStation is fully compatible with the DreamStation 2.

The DreamStation 2 is an Auto CPAP machine but is also completely capable of fixed CPAP therapy. A Nonin pulse oximeter can also be attached to the machine.

Cleaning requires nothing more than warm, soapy water. Rinse out the humidification chamber daily and wipe off the exterior with a damp cloth.

The small, sleek DreamStation 2 AutoCPAP Advanced retains and refines all the great features of the original DreamStation and delivers comfortable, effective CPAP therapy to help you get a great night’s rest.
