Mask Sizing in the CPAP Industry

Currently there isn’t any specific standard for the sizing of CPAP masks. Sizing differs among all models of CPAP masks, even within manufacturers. The usual sizes of masks are petite, extra small, small, medium, large, and extra-large. 

Some manufacturers are starting to include a variety of cushion sizes within one mask package to help alleviate the issues sizing can bring up. In most cases, the headgear included with a CPAP mask is one size fits most, while small or large headgear sizes are usually available if needed.

Gauging the Size of Your Face

Q: How do you get fitted for a CPAP mask?

Manufacturers now offer sizing gauges for most of their mask products. These are very useful when determining the mask size. Although not always completely accurate because individuals have unique facial features, it is a great place to start.

Mask Fit and Adjustment

Upon choosing the mask size and style for your face, you will need to adjust it properly before sleep. While sitting upright on your bed, turn the machine on, and hold the mask against your face with the straps unfastened. 

Lie down in your normal sleeping position with your head on your pillow. Now gently and slowly pull the straps until you get a good seal, and then fasten the straps.
