Finding the right CPAP cleaner

It is no surprise that the Philips Recall that occurred in June 2021 has us all wondering which CPAP machine we should trust but also what cleaner we should use now.

It is important to know that some CPAP manufactures are now excluding warranty coverage if a CPAP has been used with an Ozone device, stating a void to the internal electronics.

The FDA also recommends not using ozone due to respiratory issues. We must remember that Ozone is a gas, and there is always a chance of leakage if not handled properly.

Q: Is ozone or UV better to clean CPAP?

A: We recommend using a device that employs UVC light. Please watch the video below and also read further to understand the difference between ozone-based and UV-based CPAP cleaners.

More information on ozone can be found on the FDA website under Part 801, Subchapter H, Subpart H - Special requirements for specific Devices.

If you are looking into a new CPAP equipment cleaner, you may be wondering what is a healthier alternative to just soap and water. Nowadays we have less time on our hands, and cleaning can feel like a hassle.

As you come across a variety of cleaners on the market, it is best to know that all cleaning equipment comes with several different features, but not all options are created equal.

This article will shed light on the differences between ozone and UVC cleaners and what is the best cleaner on the market today. If you are looking to make a healthier choice and ensure the longevity of your CPAP machine, please keep reading.

Why do we need to clean our CPAP equipment?

Unclean CPAP equipment can be contaminated with viruses and bacteria that can make you sick. Germs from your lungs, throat, and mouth can get into your hose and mask as you breathe nightly into your equipment.

Even germs on the skin can easily get transferred onto your mask and hose. Other allergens, such as dust and mold, can also contaminate your CPAP equipment.

All CPAP machines and the accessories that go along with your therapy need to be cleaned regularly, so that germs and contaminants do not grow inside your equipment, making you sick.

Dust and dirt are also known to cause problems with the CPAP machine, making it more likely to break down or need replacing.

Can I stop washing my equipment if I use a sanitizer?

The best answer is NO. Continue to follow the manufacturer's guide for cleaning your equipment. Sanitizers do not remove dead skin, oil, make up, and other organic materials. Staying on top of your CPAP hygiene and cleaning will aid in better equipment function and a healthier you.

The best CPAP cleaner for you

To help you find the best CPAP cleaner, I had a chance to read about, use, and review some of the following cleaners:

  • The SoClean 2 CPAP Sanitizer (ozone)
  • 3B Medical Lumin CPAP Cleaner (UV)
  • 3B Medical Lumin Bullet UV Hose Cleaner (UV)
  • Liviliti Paptizer UVC Smart CPAP Sanitizer (UVC)

Amongst these products, I have found the Liviliti Paptizer UVC Smart CPAP Sanitizer (UVC) to be the most effective and universal CPAP cleaner and sanitizer for my CPAP equipment, including the day-to-day cleaning and sanitizing I am faced with during this pandemic.

I will go over some key components and elements below to show why the Liviliti smart Paptizer should probably be the next cleaner in your home.

Please note that UVC light is also harmful to humans. Over long exposure, it can lead to cataracts and skin cancer. However, UVC lights in cleaners come with an automatic safety feature which shuts off the UVC lights when the disinfection is over, or if the machine's lid is opened.

This ensures the user will never come into contact with any of the harmful UVC rays. There is no risk of leakage or residual smell, and you do not have to guess whether it is safe to use. Once the light is off, you are good to go, and there is no delay in use.

Why choose the Liviliti Paptizer as your sanitizer

The Liviliti Paptizer is one of the newer CPAP equipment sanitizers on the market, having launched in 2020. It has the largest internal capacity on the market at 11.89” x 10.59” x 6.06” in size.

It comes with 40 UVC LEDs with 5-side multidirectional medical grade sanitization and kills over 99% of bacteria in as little as 3 minutes without the use of ozone.

UVC LED kills bacteria by destroying DNA & RNA structure. It is widely used in sanitizing devices in hospitals. The best feature about the Liviliti Paptizer is that it cleans anything that fits!

This multi purpose cleaner can be used for anything around the house such as:

  • Cell phones
  • Car keys
  • Kids toys
  • N95 mask
  • Remote controls
  • The list goes on!

Benefits of using UVC vs Ozone cleaners

When using ozone-based cleaners, we must wait a specific amount of time, usually between 1 to 2 hours, before the sanitized items can be used again. This is to ensure that the ozone can break down into non-toxic components before the user can open their machine and retrieve their CPAP equipment.

It has been advised when using some ozone-based models in closed areas to not be present in the same room if the machine is in use. In addition, most ozone-based cleaners can leave a residual smell which requires you to re-wash and dry your equipment before use.

The most convenient part of the Liviliti Paptizer is there is no delay in using your products once sanitized. It kills 99% of bacteria in 3 minutes without the use of ozone or mercury.

The Liviliti Paptizer has been lab tested to kill E-Coli, Staphylococcus Aureus, Candida Albicans, and P Aeruginosa. The Liviliti also has UVC waves that help reduce odor that can’t be washed away while most ozone cleaners leave odor, requiring you to wash the equipment once sanitized.

The Liviliti Paptizer is also equipped with 360-degree coverage, which includes a 5-sided multidirectional sanitization and bottom reflection built for maximum sanitization.

The best part of the Liviliti is that it requires no expensive filter kits or cartridges that need replacing or maintaining. Depending on the ozone cleaner, some of the filter replacements need to be changed 2 to 4 times a year. That adds up.

We have also recently seen a shortage of the filters, leaving the cleaner unused and untouched. There are also no adapters or specific hoses that need to be purchased on the side to run the Liviliti sanitizer.

The best part of using a cleaner with UVC instead of ozone is that it is manufacturer friendly and does not affect any warranties, unlike some ozone-related products out on the market today.

Features & benefits of the Liviliti Paptizer

This portable and built to last sanitizer includes a 10,000-hour life on LEDs and comes with some impressive features only seen on the Liviliti Paptizer.

It is very easy to use and requires minimal setup. It is as simple as plugging one end of the power supply to the device and the other to an electrical outlet, placing your equipment into the cleaner, and pressing the sterilize and deodor button.

This will start the 180 seconds (3 minute) sanitization process. You will then see an LED countdown timer and then a double beep when the product is clean. For the greatest results, it is recommended to sanitize the equipment when it is dry.

This is where my favorite feature is introduced for the very first time with any cleaner. The Liviliti Paptizer comes with a drying and warming feature, so now you do not have to worry about wearing wet and cold equipment before bed.

Instead of using the 3-minute disinfection mode, push the second button which indicates “Sterilize & Deodor, Drying, Temp Control, and Sterile storage.” This is a 60-minute drying and sterilization process. The neat thing is you can push the button and carry on with your day, and it is safe to store objects in the Liviliti sanitizer for up to 24 hours!

With the Liviliti, cleaning your mask couldn’t be easier. For the most effective way of cleaning:

  • Place the mask on the rack with the inside of the mask facing up for maximum UV exposure and sanitation
  • You then close the lid and press the ON/OFF button to power up the Paptizer
  • You will see all 4 buttons on the device light up
  • There are three modes to choose from; choose which you want
  • Simply press the button, and the disinfection process will begin
  • Place your mask, hose, water chamber, and chin strap into the Liviliti hassle free.

To ensure your health and safety, a built-in security feature in the Liviliti Paptizer protects users from being accidentally exposed to UVC rays by automatically shutting off the lights when the lid is opened.

There is no having to guess when the cleaner is safe to use, unlike with some of the ozone cleaners. Simply open the lid, and the lights shut off.

Finally, the Liviliti Paptizer comes with a 2-year warranty. Registering your cleaner for the warranty is simple. Visit www.liviliti.com/warranty. You will need the serial number (SN) located on your unit during the registration process.
